EAST LANSING, Mich., July 15, 2024 –
The Institute for Public Policy and Social Research at Michigan State University (IPPSR) has released the following statement from IPPSR Director Dr. Matt Grossmann regarding the passing of his predecessor, Dr. Doug Roberts, who served as Director of IPPSR from 2003 until 2014.
"Dr. Doug Roberts was a tremendous public servant who led the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research with honor and integrity for over a decade. His leadership helped our organization to flourish, and his contributions made IPPSR one of the leading public policy voices in the State. I speak for the Michigan State University and IPPSR staff in extending our sympathies to Dr. Roberts's family and friends during this time of loss."
Previous to his time at IPPSR, Roberts served in Michigan government for more than 28 years and held many key positions, including state treasurer, director of the Senate Fiscal Agency, deputy superintendent of the Department of Education, deputy director of the Department of Management and Budget (DMB), and acting director of DMB. He played a major role in creating and adopting "Proposal A," a major change in how Michigan raised and distributed taxes for education. Roberts held a doctorate and master's degree in economics from MSU and a bachelor's in economics from the University of Maryland.
