"Polarized by Degrees" New Grossmann Book Explores Political Polarization and Educational Attainment EAST LANSING, Mich., September 3, 2024- Dr. Matt Grossmann, Director of the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR) at Michigan State University (MSU), has released his newest book, "Polarized by Degrees". The work, written in collaboration with David A. Hopkins, Associate Professor of Political Science at Boston College, explores the nation's current political polarization and how it has caused a diploma divide between the parties. Grossmann and Hopkins show in "Polarized by Degrees" that the increasing education divide between the parties results from citizens' opposing views as to who is better able to make policy decisions, with Democrats preferring credentialed experts. At the same time, Republican voters have increasingly held populist views and show skepticism towards supposed experts, including teachers, scientists, journalists, universities, non-profit organizations, and even corporations. In "Polarized by Degrees," Professor Hopkins and I have documented and explained the dominant trends Americans see all around us, "said Dr. Matt Grossmann, co-author of the book. Grossmann continued, "Educated liberals are winning the culture war, but not without a backlash that evens American party competition and polarizes our institutions and society."
